Celebrating Waypoint nurses during National Nursing Week

May 8 to 14, 2017 marks National Nursing Week in Canada, and this year’s theme from the Canadian Nurses Association is “#YESThisIsNursing”. Waypoint nurses embody this theme every day in their clinical practice and with their patients as they walk with them on their mental health journey.

Recovery begins with a person’s introduction to mental health care support, whether as patient in hospital or as a client with community supports. As everyone’s mental health care needs are individualized, versatility is absolutely essential in mental health nursing.

Nurses provide therapeutic support for predictable and unpredictable complex care needs in many specialized areas. At Waypoint this includes dual diagnosis, geriatric psychiatry, forensics, concurrent disorders/addiction, psychosocial rehabilitation, acute mental health and transitional support to the community with outpatient follow-up, among others. Our nurses’ skill and ability to assess both physical care and mental health care needs assist in the development of individualized plans of care aiding in the recovery process.

Waypoint nurses are supported in their professional development to pursue specialized credentials in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing or Gerontological Nursing through the Canadian Nurses Association. These are two of the twenty recognized specialty credentials from the organization that require experience requirements, a written exam and continuous education to maintain the certification.

To all Waypoint nurses, THANK YOU for your dedication and hard work each day to support patient care. Your professionalism and continued focus on professional practice is an example of the care that exemplifies your commitment to the recovery of our patients and the community we live in. HAPPY NURSES WEEK TO ALL OF YOU!
