announce the appointment of two new medical directors. This includes the establishment of an additional leadership role that will optimize the integration of physical and mental health care for patients.
The Board of Directors approved the medical director appointments of Dr. Achal Mishra and Dr. Kevin Young to join the hospital’s leadership team and Medical Advisory Committee at its February meeting. Dr. Mishra is the hospital’s new Medical Director, Provincial Programs and Dr. Young is the new Medical Director, Integrated Care. The board and hospital extends its appreciation to Dr. Brant Bergstrome as the past Medical Director, Provincial Programs for his commitment and support.
Dr. Mishra has completed his subspecialty training in Forensic Psychiatry through the University of Toronto. He has been part of Waypoint as a staff psychiatrist in the provincial forensic mental health programs since July 2018 and has provided interim coverage as the Acting Medical Director, Provincial Programs in the last few months.
He has international and national training and experience having worked in India, the United Kingdom and in Nova Scotia. His academic experience includes four years as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, and as an assistant clinical lecturer at Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne. U.K. He was awarded the Canadian Academy of Psychiatry and the Law Fellowship Award 2018 as well as a number of research awards. As a researcher, Dr. Mishra has been the principal investigator on a number of projects and grants, and has authored or co-authored several publications. He is additionally engaged in the education and supervision of subspecialty forensic psychiatry residents, and regularly contributes to various quality of care and strategic initiatives.
Dr. Kevin Young, an internist and geriatrician, joined Waypoint full time in September 2019 having expanded from his part time role with the hospital as the Physician Lead for the Specialized Geriatrics Services (SGS) Program. Along with his lead role with SGS, he also serves as a co-medical director for the Provincial Geriatric Leadership Office and is founder of the Orillia Seniors Care Clinic. A recognized author, collaborator, presenter and teacher, Dr. Young has published many peer reviewed publications, including for Nature Medicine, the Journal of Immunology, and the Journal of Molecular Medicine.
He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toronto and went on to do postgraduate training in both geriatrics and general internal medicine. He also has a PhD in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology. Dr. Young supervises medical residents through the Rural Ontario Medical Program, McMaster University and the University of Toronto.
Both Dr. Mishra and Dr. Young bring a wealth of experience to their new roles. Their expertise is an asset to the hospital’s leadership team and will support the strategic vision and operational objectives moving forward.
