The Brébeuf Program for Regional Forensics is a minimum secure forensic program serving central Ontario.

This program includes a 20-bed co-ed inpatient hospital program and transitional outpatient services. We work with the Ontario Court system and the Ontario Review Board to provide treatment and rehabilitative programs for people who have come into conflict with the law as a result of a serious mental illness.

Special Information for Patients, Families and Visitors

Admission to the program is limited to those who are ordered by the Ontario courts system or Ontario Review Board.

 Court ordered patients will work with an interprofessional healthcare team to complete court-ordered treatments or to determine issues such as fitness to stand trial or assessment of criminal responsibility.

 Patients who are under the authority of the Ontario Review Board will work with the team to develop a recovery-focused treatment plan within the limits of their disposition. This plan provides for the gradual access of privilege upon ongoing risk assessment and a least restrictive environment with the ultimate goal of returning to the community in a safe and sustainable manner.

  • Psychiatric assessment to assist the Ontario courts in determining fitness and criminal responsibility
  • Psychological and Psychosocial assessment to aid in treatment planning and risk evaluation
  • Treatment planning that includes nursing, psychiatry and psychology input as well as leisure, recreation, psychosocial programming, family support, vocational training and occupational therapy
  • Specialized psycho-educational and cognitive-behavioural treatment (CBT) groups for substance dependence behaviours, anger management, recovery and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) approaches including mindfulness sessions to promote recovery and reduce the risk for recidivism
  • Pharmacological treatment
  • Behaviour assessment and intervention
  • Social rehabilitation programs, individualized and/or in groups with a focus on self-care, task performance and social competence
  • Community integration support including on going risk assessment and monitoring of Ontario Review Board dispositions
  • Annual reports to the Ontario Review Board

 Referrals to Waypoint’s forensic mental health programs are accepted only through the court system or under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Review Board. We do not admit individuals directly from the community to these programs.

Visiting a Patient

Visitors are asked to contact the program/social worker prior to visiting. On some occasions, patients may refuse to meet with visitors, even though they may have travelled a considerable distance. When this occurs, we respect the decision of the patient and we will provide support where appropriate. Waypoint may also restrict visiting hours for clinical or security reasons.

 For safety reasons, common areas of the program are monitored by video recording. No cameras or recording devices are allowed in the program.
